City Library
Beirut, Lebanon
A 1,400 sqm derelict municipal building in the Tarik Jdide neighborhood was converted into the main public library of a chain of ten public libraries spearheaded by Assabil, a local NGO, in collaboration with the Municipality of Beirut. The concept integrates the various scales of the city, the neighborhood, and the street: The conversion project transformed the roof into an elevated roof garden, at the scale of the city.
The library, on two levels, reflects the neighborhood, and on the ground floor, the space was enlarged and enhanced to create a public garden, outdoor theatre, and multi-purpose hall for the benefit and use of the inhabitants of this neighborhood. The interior is distinguished by the double height atrium and multiple learning spaces.
